Coal Mining Investigations

What do I do if there is a risk of shallow mine working beneath a property?

Subject to the findings of a Coal Mining Risk Assessment, further investigation works to assess the risk of shallow mine workings to a proposed development may be required. The investigation works will typically comprise the advancing boreholes to depths of up to 30m to assess the thickness, condition and likelihood of historic workings within shallow seams beneath a property.

Should the borehole investigation encounter workings beneath a property, then further remediation works will likely be required to stabilise the former workings and prevent the risk of future collapse. This will usually involve drill and grout remediation where boreholes are drilled on a grid layout in the areas of the proposed buildings and grout is pumped into the workings to fill any voids.
